Simple Wedding

This was a simple two layer wedding cake that I did for a couple that goes to our church. Some fresh flowers were added later by the florist but I was not able to get a picture of it. The design all over this cake is called "cornelli lace" (see picture to the right for an up close shot.) It's one of my favorite to do on cakes cause it's actually very simple to do but makes it look so much more "wedding-ish".

Family Baby Shower

When my sister was pregnant with her second daughter we decided to throw them a surprise "family shower". The whole family came and were showered by friends of theirs that wanted to bless and encourage them as they looked forward to the arrival of little Abigail. I decided to do this little cake for them. I chose purple cause that's the main color that the baby room is done in.

Summer Wedding in Montana

In the summer of 2006 I got to do my Cousin Cassie's wedding cake up in Montana. It was a beautiful outdoor wedding and this cake fit just perfectly!

My cousin actually designed this cake when it came to the square shape and spiraled stacking. It was my first square cake and I loved it! She left the actual decor up to me only specifying that she wanted something fairly simple.

Here it is in the walk in freezer before getting flowered up :D.

Each layer was a different flavor. Chocolate, White, Lemon and Carrot. For this cake I did not do the baking also. Because the wedding was in Montana my cousin ordered the cakes from a little bakery. We picked them up and I did the rest. Ah! so much easier!

Sweet December Wedding

In December of 2001 I did a "cake" for my aunts wedding, as you can see it was actually five cakes :). It's a little difficult to see the designs in these pictures but on two of the big round cakes and the medium size cake I did simple six sided scrolly designs filled with cornelli lace circling the sides, and small snowflake type marks all around them. The third big round just had the little snowflake marks interspersed and the smallest top cake had just the cornelli lace all over it. The tops of all of them were plain with rose petals sprinkled around. The flowers on the smallest top cake were extras from the wedding flowers. Just recently, Terah and I did a bridal shower for our dear friend Erin who got married yesterday! Seeing as it is December the shower was a wintery theme. We made many snowflakes in two sizes out of a royal frosting. The bigger ones were hung on Terah's Christmas tree, the smaller ones adorned these tiny bite size cupcakes. We also made some "H"s to go on some of the cupcakes (H being the first letter of Erin's new last name). Enjoy these pictures. I included some of the ones on the tree and also of us slaving over them :). I can't take all the credit for these, Terah helped a ton! She did all the mini snowflakes and the beautiful scrolly "H"s!!

"Spiderman"

This was a birthday cake that I did for my Bible Study Shepherd in February of 2003. Young is a huge fan of the comic book heroes, so our bible study thrrw a spiderman themed party for him.

I sketched out the spiderman face on paper and then cut it up so that I could trace it on one layer at a time.
For the shiny black areas I used a clear piping gell that I colored with black frosting coloring.

It's a little hard to tell in this picture. The border along the bottom is a combination of stright lines and little piped spiders. Don't look too close, I think the spiders only have six legs.

Needless to say, this cake took me a bit of time. But, I had so much fun! It is definately one of my favorite cakes.

"S squared"

In February of 2007 I did this cake for some friends, Scott and Sara Mallon. Sara decided she wanted the square, sideways stacked cake after seeing one that I had done for my cousin (not yet posted). She also chose the colors. The other little embelishments were mine, but I can't remember now whose idea it was to use the "S squared". They had used this on their invitation and program and we thought it only fitting that it should also grace this simple, slightly more modern looking cake. I printed it in the same font that they used and then traced it onto the cake. I have to admit i wasn't sure how it would turn out, but was pleased with the result. I had so much fun!

I was working full time when I did this cake and didn't have a lot of time. Sara helped me out by ordering undecorated Costco sheet cakes. I was able to cut them to the right sizes and then frost, decorate and stack them. This saved me a lot of time, which turned out to be even more of a blessing than I realized because right in the middle of decorating I had a little bit of a catastrophe. The mixer I was using to make my frosting quit working :( oh man did I pray! Thankfully another one was found and I was able to continue. It set me back some, but no one ever knew (except for those helping me and cheering me on). I set the cake on the cake table just seconds before the first guests walked into the reception. Whew! Mission Accomplished!
To add just a bit of color I sprinkled a few red rose petals on the top, sides, and on the table around the cake.

One of the joys of doing someones wedding cake is really trying to make the cake match the theme and feel of the wedding. I like to let the Bride dream and then do my best to make that dream come true. I felt like that was accomplished with this cake!

Flowers, Bugs and Butterflies

This was probably one of the most interesting and brain challenging cakes I've ever done. Thankfully some one else made the bugs and mushrooms! A friend of mine who happened to be marrying my husbands twin brother, saw a picture of this cake and asked me if I could recreate it for their wedding cake. I told her I'd do my best and here is the result! Although this was a fun cake to do, and I'm so glad I did it for Julia, I doubt I'll ever do another one without charging an arm and a leg. Friends, especially ones that marry into the family, just get special treatment :0).
Another aspect that made doing this cake very different was that I was also a bridesmaid in the wedding! I literally finished the cake and then flew into my dress in time for pictures.
I made all the flowers, ferns and leaves beforehand with royal icing (a type of frosting that hardens) This made the decorating a bit more simple because I could just stick them on where I wanted them.

A long time ago i developed a love for cake decorating. Over the years it has blossomed and grown thanks to some decorating lessons that were given to me as a graduation present, and the support of many family and friends. It is my desire to use this love that I have to help my husband bring in a little extra money. I decided to create this blog as a place to put pictures and stories of the cakes that I've created both in the past and future. If the Lord blesses this endeavor I may eventually have an official website but for now this will do.
